I shoot Weddings!

February 5, 2017 by julie@julieshipman.com

“I didn’t know you shot weddings!” is a comment I’ve heard several times recently. I guess it’s because I’ve never really promoted myself as a “Wedding Photographer” as that seems such a daunting title. While I’ve actually shot many weddings over the years, my main focus has been elsewhere.

So, when a good friend of mine asked last week, “When did you start shooting weddings?” I answered with, “When my clients started getting married!”  And, in a way it’s true.  The weddings I’ve been shooting lately are kids I’ve watched grow up. While it does illuminate my age, I feel honored and proud that these former cute little toddlers remember me when it’s time to Tie the Knot.

Below is one such wedding I did in October, 2016, for Jordan Dowd.  I’ve known her for well over a decade… I’ve done her family photos, her brother’s ski race photos, her high school cheer, dance  & graduation photos, her engagement photos… and now this exceptional day. The Dowd Family is close to my heart.

I do really enjoy shooting weddings. I love the photojournalist style of telling a story. I love the ‘moments’ that will always be remembered… and I love the challenge of keeping my creativity and energy up for a very long day and night!

Below are images from weddings as recent as January 2017 and as far back as 2001… so yeah, I guess that might just mean I need to embrace the title of “Wedding Photographer!”

Enjoy the images and feel free to ask questions!

Wedding in a Barn… Kamas, Utah.

A joyful Bride and Groom in a stunning Utah setting.
… and a break on the porch swing…

How about Brides in the Snow?

La Caille… many years ago. The beautiful Victoria!
Or… just a month ago… Meghan and Peter at Snowbird.
ahhh…. we love our dogs!

I always love those Cowboy Weddings! We are good at those in Park City!

On a horse, getting hitched in the rain.
Dancing the night away as the rain clears.
Cowboy boots are always in style… Wedding Boots!
The faces of the feet.
More cowboy boots!
These boots just got hitched in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Speaking of Sun Valley, destination weddings may be my favorite.  I’m always up for a fun adventure. I photographed this beautiful bride in Florida!

Nicole. Pure class and style.
Millcreek Canyon in the Wasatch Mountains… did I mention that I LOVE second weddings? So relaxed and fun!
Heidi and Chris.
Another second wedding… in the backyard… with the kids and dog. Nothing better!
Backyard wedding fun…
… and this guy just had to photo bomb all the pretty ladies!
Another beautiful bride… yep, at the courthouse. Why not?
And the groom’s parents reflect on the moment.
Portraits in the park after…

And, maybe you’d like some glamour shots for your bridals? This beauty did…

Downtown SLC.
Or gazing out at the Great Salt Lake.

Possibilities are endless.  We just envision it and make it happen.

And, finally, don’t forget that the Engagement is spectacular too. Here are three of these… all in the snow ~ such incredible and spontaneous moments! Love it.

During a sleigh ride in Heber Utah at the Homestead… she was THRILLED! They got married in Miami.
On the hill at the Canyons in Park City… she was completely surprised… Kasey Stanislaw of @HarvestMoonEvents put this together.  She’s pretty awesome too!

And these two… I had the pleasure of the engagement and the wedding. FUN couple!

The White Barn. Park City.
Wedding in Logan…

My photo tips and philosophy for shooting weddings:

Be spontaneous. Always be ready with your camera. Bring a bag with lots of extra cards and batteries. Hire a second or third shooter if you can. Don’t miss the ‘getting ready’ shots as they are often the most tender and special moments. Move around! Get up on a chair and shoot down on the crowd… or get down on the floor and shoot up during the first dance. Stay until they leave cause that Going Away thing is always a happy time!

Most of all ~ stay calm. Keep shooting. Have fun.
